Outdoor is often called unmeasurable. It isn't — it just needs different instruments. Practical methods for proving and improving OOH performance in Nigeria.
"We can't measure outdoor" is the most common objection we hear, and it is only half true. Outdoor cannot be measured the way a search campaign is measured. It can absolutely be measured — with instruments suited to what it actually does.
Start by measuring the right thing
Outdoor is an awareness and salience medium. Judging it on last-click conversions is a category error that will always produce a disappointing number, because the format's contribution happens upstream of the click.
The metrics that reflect what outdoor does are brand awareness, brand recall, consideration, search volume, and direct or branded traffic. Set those as the campaign's success criteria before it launches, not after.
Baseline first — this is the part people skip
You cannot measure a lift without a pre-campaign reading. Two weeks before launch, capture:
- Branded search volume in the campaign region
- Direct and branded organic traffic to your site
- Any tracked awareness or consideration score
- Baseline sales in the target area
Without this, every post-campaign number is unfalsifiable. With it, the analysis becomes straightforward.
Geographic lift testing
The most rigorous method available in Nigeria, and it does not require special technology. Run the campaign in one city or district and hold back a comparable one. Compare movement in the metrics above between the two.
Lagos makes this practical: a campaign concentrated on the Lekki–Victoria Island corridor can be tested against a demographically similar audience in Ikeja that the campaign did not reach. Differences that appear in the exposed area and not the control area are attributable with reasonable confidence.
Digital signals that actually track outdoor
Several digital metrics move reliably when outdoor works:
Branded search volume. The cleanest single indicator. Someone who sees a board and searches the brand later is a directly attributable outcome, visible in Search Console and Google Trends.
Direct traffic. People who remember a name and type it in. A step-change in direct sessions correlating with launch is meaningful.
Geo-segmented analytics. Segment site traffic to the campaign area and compare against the rest of the country over the same period.
Distinct landing paths. A short, memorable vanity URL or a campaign-specific WhatsApp entry point gives a hard count, though expect it to under-report substantially — most people who are influenced will not use it.
Impressions, honestly
Daily impression figures are traffic-based estimates, not measured views. They are useful for comparing sites against each other and for planning reach, and they are not evidence that a specific number of people looked at your board. Treat them as a planning currency rather than a performance result.
Give it time
Outdoor campaigns under four weeks rarely generate measurable lift, because frequency has not accumulated. Eight to twelve weeks is where the format does its best work. Brands that book two weeks, see nothing, and conclude outdoor does not work have generally proved something else: that two weeks is too short.
Improving return
A few levers move outdoor ROI more than anything else:
- Concentrate rather than scatter. Dominating one corridor beats a thin national presence.
- Fix the creative before adding sites. A clearer board on five sites outperforms a cluttered one on fifteen.
- Run long enough to build frequency. Duration compounds; a short burst does not.
- Coordinate with digital. Audiences exposed to both respond better than to either alone. Align the message and the timing.
Set the right metrics, baseline properly, run long enough, and outdoor becomes as accountable as any other line on the plan.
