Choosing the Right Location for Your Billboard: A Strategic Guide

The single biggest determinant of campaign performance is not creative or budget — it is site selection. A practical framework for choosing Lagos billboard locations.

Two brands can run identical creative, for identical durations, at identical spend, and see completely different results. The variable that most often explains the gap is site selection. Here is how to approach it properly.

Start with the audience, not the map

The most common mistake is choosing sites the marketing team drives past. It feels like validation — you see your own board every morning — but your commute is not your customer's.

Begin instead with a description of who you are trying to reach and where they physically are during the day. A campaign for a premium financial product belongs on the Victoria Island and Ikoyi corridors. A mass-market FMCG launch belongs at Oshodi, on Ikorodu Road and along Agege Motor Road. These are different cities with different audiences, and no amount of creative quality compensates for addressing the wrong one.

Understand the traffic, not just the volume

Raw vehicle counts are a starting point, not an answer. Three things matter more:

Speed. Slow traffic is good traffic. A site on a congested arterial delivers far more exposure per vehicle than one on a free-flowing stretch, even at lower volumes.

Direction. A board facing morning inbound traffic reaches commuters heading to work; one facing the outbound carriageway reaches them going home. These are different mindsets, and for retail or hospitality the difference is commercially significant.

Approach distance. How long is the structure in view before a driver passes it? A site with a 300-metre clear approach outperforms one revealed at the last moment, regardless of size.

Check the sightline in person

Photographs flatter billboards. Before committing, visit the site at the time of day your campaign will matter most, and look at it from the driver's seat, in the lane your audience will actually be in.

Look for anything that interrupts the view: mature trees that will be fuller in the rainy season, a flyover that clips the top of the face, roadside trading that obscures the base, a competing structure that reads first. A site that is technically excellent and visually obstructed is a site you should not buy.

Think in routes, not points

Individual sites build awareness. Sequences build memory. Three well-spaced structures along a single commuter route deliver noticeably better recall than three scattered across unrelated parts of the city, because the same person sees all three on one journey.

When budget is limited, concentrate. Dominating one corridor almost always beats a thin presence across five.

Match the format to the environment

Expressways call for unipoles and gantries — elevated, large, legible at speed. Dense urban streets call for portrait formats that fit tight building lines. Premium districts with stop-start traffic suit digital, where motion and day-part scheduling earn their premium. Choosing a format that fights its environment wastes money.

Verify compliance before you commit

Every legitimate structure in Lagos carries LASAA permitting. Confirm the site is permitted and structurally certified before signing. An unpermitted board can be removed mid-campaign, and the advertiser — not just the operator — absorbs the loss.

A practical shortlist test

Before booking, ask five questions of each site: Does my audience travel this route? Is traffic slow here at the relevant hours? Is the approach clear for at least 200 metres? Does the format suit the road? Is it fully permitted?

Sites that answer yes five times are worth their rate card. Sites that do not are worth walking away from, however attractive the discount.
